Konga Beat 1.1.2 - Windows, Linux (Download) [Patch Notes]

One of the interesting quirks of the Donkey Konga games is the inconsistency of genre options across regional versions of each game. Donkey Konga 3 and the North American version of Donkey Konga 2 (NA DK2) have "Anime" as a genre, but the European version of Donkey Konga 2 (EU DK2) does not. Likewise, EU DK2 has "Disco," which neither DK3 nor NA DK2 has.

Even when games share the same genre, they may not be assigned the same numerical value. What does that mean? Well, if you look at each song's entry in SongInfo.res, you'll find the song's genre is tracked as an integer, not a character or string. If a song's genre is "Game", then its value across all regions is 0. Similarly, "Classical" is 4 in every version of Donkey Konga 2 and 3. There is, however, one exception: Jazz. It is not present in EU DK2, but in DK3 and NA DK2, it's 6 and 8, respectively.

Because I primarily tested Konga Beat and Konga Launcher against NA DK2, Konga Beat originally used the American genre list as the canonical list of genre options. If you wanted the correct genre for DK3 or EU DK2, you had to consult the genre table in the Konga Beat documentation. It wasn't ideal, but it was good enough when other pending tasks were a higher priority.

With this most recent update, I have added the ability to assign the appropriate genre for the regional version you are creating the track for. Something I want to emphasize as part of this update: compatibility with other versions of DK2/DK3 has not changed. Your custom tracks will continue to work with every version of Donkey Konga 2 and 3 supported by Konga Beat. The only difference is they'll now have the appropriate genre assignment for your region of choice.

This update also improves the relationship between the project and the source audio file. Up until now, the project would track the location of the source audio as an absolute path (e.g., "C:/project/song.mp3"). For most people, this is totally fine and works as intended. However, since developing the Linux version, sharing projects between my machines has been a bit of a hassle because they don't have the exact same folder layout. Also, for example, if the project and audio file were in the same folder and you moved them together somewhere else, Konga Beat still required you to reassign the audio. Now, while the project will still track the audio file's absolute path, it will also keep a record of where the audio file is relative to the project. If Konga Beat can't find the audio file in its absolute path, it'll check the relative path too. This should hopefully make working on projects across computers much more seamless.

Konga Launcher 0.9.4 - Windows, Mac, Linux (Download) [Patch Notes]

Continuing on the path to version 1.0.0 (and open-sourcing the project), this most recent update makes minor improvements to DK3 and EU DK2 support. Namely, it increases the track limit to fully take advantage of Donkey Konga 3's 56 song limit (compared to 34 in Donkey Konga 2). If you attempt to load a playlist with more than 34 songs into Donkey Konga 2, you will receive a warning that only the first 34 songs will make it over.

Additionally, if a song is launched via Konga Launcher through Konga Beat, it will correctly appear as the first option in the music selection screen for all regions. This was originally only true for NA DK2, but it has now been extended to DK3 and EU DK2.

Coming Soon

Konga Launcher 0.9.5

There are a number of UI styling and quality-of-life issues in Konga Launcher that I would like to address in the next set of updates. I'm expecting to release the next version of Konga Launcher sometime this summer.

In Summary

Konga Beat and Konga Launcher now have better support for Donkey Konga 3 and the European version of Donkey Konga 2. There are a handful of bug fixes included in Konga Beat 1.1.2 and Konga Launcher 0.9.4 as well, so I encourage you to check out the changelogs for more details. Please try them out and let me know what you think!

Have a great weekend!
